Abstract

Repair of inguinal hernia still under debate among scientific community of the surgeons worldwide, yet none of the procedures can be considered as the ideal one. The use of bio-prostheses with tension-free inguinal hernioplasty has revolutionized the treatment of hernias. The present study aims to assess the outcomes of tension-free inguinal hernioplasty and to identify the predisposing factors of recurrence among Iraqi patients in Al-Basra city through our clinical practice for the last 5 years.  During the period (2020-2024), Data of patients who were managed during our clinical practice were reported and later analyzed. The study population composed of  228 patients. Findings of the study showed a mean patients’ age of 47.3 ± 11.6 (range 20 – 65)years and predominance of males, (86.4%).  Postoperative complications developed in 21 patients (9.2%). hospital stay ranged between 1-3 days. 18 patients had recurrent inguinal hernia at two years with a median time of recurrence of 17 months. smoking, history of diabetes mellitus (DM), constipation, obesity, chronic cough, postoperative wound infection and having complications in addition to non-compliance of the patients were the main risk factors of recurrence. In conclusion, inguinal hernia was much more frequent in adultIraqi males than females and its frequency increased with the age. Open tension-free inguinal hernioplasty is a safe and effective technique in management of inguinal hernia. The complication and recurrencce rates were comparable to that in other centers and within the accepted limits.
