Abstract

Subclinical thyroid dysfunction refers to patients who have abnormal values of normal free thyrotropin (thyroid stimulating hormone [TSH] and thyroxine T4) . The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism is 4.3% in adults and increases slightly more in elderly people and women.
Subclinical hypothyroidism has been associated with increased cholesterol and risk of atherosclerosis, but the data are insufficient and the same is true for subclinical hyperthyroidism. The appearance of recent studies allowed the authors of this work to carry out a review on the impact of thyroid dysfunction on the cardiovascular system and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
