Abstract

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation
and systemic involvement. This study aims to explore the epidemiology of RA and strategies for its
prevention.
Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather evidence on the epidemiology and
prevention of RA. Key findings were analyzed and synthesized to highlight the prevalence, incidence, risk
factors, and modifiable factors associated with the disease.
Results: RA affects approximately 0.5-1% of the global population, with higher prevalence in women and
increasing incidence with age. Genetic factors, such as certain human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles,
contribute to disease susceptibility. Environmental triggers, including smoking, obesity, and exposure to
certain occupational hazards, are important modifiable risk factors for RA. Additionally, there is
accumulating evidence suggesting a role for gut dysbiosis, vitamin D deficiency, and hormonal factors in the
development of RA.
Prevention strategies for RA primarily focus on reducing modifiable risk factors. Smoking cessation has been
shown to significantly decrease the risk of developing RA, while weight management and healthy lifestyle
habits, including regular physical activity and a balanced diet, may also play a protective role. Early
identification and treatment of individuals at high-risk for RA, such as those with positive autoantibodies, can
help prevent or delay the onset of the disease.
Conclusion: Understanding the epidemiology of RA and implementing preventive measures are essential for
reducing the burden of the disease. Identifying individuals at high-risk, promoting healthy lifestyle habits,
and targeting modifiable risk factors, such as smoking and obesity, can potentially prevent or delay the onset
of RA. Further research is needed to elucidate the complex interplay between genetic and environmental
factors and to develop targeted prevention strategies.
